The area of the
laboratory is the development of computational informational technologies in
the environmental sciences (meteorology, hydrology, ecology), and their utilization
as the scientific and educational tools. The numerical models of boundary layer
in atmosphere and ocean, hydrological objects at the land surface, snow pack
physics, as well as mesoscale atmospheric processes have been constructed and
further improved. The main idea of this activity is to make the progress by
close cooperation of the specialists in hydrodynamics, geophysics and
computational science. While solving heavy computational problems related to
these topics, the resources of high-performance parallel clusters in SRCC MSU
and JSCC RAS are engaged. In order to advance the performance of the codes of
geophysical models, they are adopted for such kind of parallel computers.
The considerable part of
the activity deals with education. Scientific researchers of the laboratory
give lectures, practical seminars, supervise course works and degree dissertations of students at the departments of computational technologies and modeling (Faculty of Computational
Mathematics and Cybernetics), meteorology and climatology (Faculty of Geography);
they also participate in the organization of international schools for young
scientists «CITES» (2003, 2005, 2007 yr.) and conferences on the computational
and informational technologies in the environmental sciences “ENVIROMIS” (2002,
2004, 2006 yr.).
The laboratory carries out the regular multidisciplinary scientific educational seminar “Mathematical modeling of geophysical processes: direct and inverse problems” (the organizers are academician V. P. Dymnikov and corresponding member of RAS V. N. Lykosov). Scientific researchers, teachers and students from Institute of Numerical Mathematics RAS, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Geography, Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics,
Hydrometcenter of Russia take part in the sessions of the seminar.
The laboratory of
methods for distant learning invites scientists and organizations for
cooperation in fields of numerical modeling and high-performance computing in
environmental studies, as well as integration of numerical models of
geophysical processes in education, e.g. distant learning.
In the laboratory web resources and databases relevant to its field have been
constructed and now been maintained and developed. These include web-sites:
